In their third meeting this season, Westgate was finally able to top the Central Catholic Lady Eagles.

Behind a 16-6 fourth-quarter advantage, the visitors edged Central Catholic 46-44 Thursday, the first day of action at Central Catholic’s Lady Eagle Christmas Classic.

While Central Catholic outscored Westgate 13-12 in the first quarter and 16-12 in the second for a 29-24 halftime advantage, both teams put up six points in the third quarter, with Central Catholic leading 35-30 after three.

In the fourth, however, Westgate held Central Catholic (8-4) down defensively and came to life again offensively.

Other top Central Catholic contributors included Abbie Bergeron, nine points and a rebound and Courtney McGuire, three points.

Thursday’s game was supposed to be the second of two games (the first was supposed to be Ellender vs. Jeanerette), but Central Catholic coach Kindra Halverson said Jeanerette withdrew from the tournament Wednesday, forcing Central Catholic to quickly rework the schedule.

Now, Ellender will play back-to-back games today, one at 4 p.m. against Terrebonne and again at 5:30 p.m. against Westgate, while Central Catholic will close the day with a 7 p.m. game against Terrebonne.

On Saturday, Westgate will play Terrebonne at 1 p.m., while Central Catholic will close the tournament with a 2:30 p.m. game against Ellender.
