Ophthalmologist joins Teche Regional Medical Center staff

Jared Thurston, M.D., has opened an ophthalmology practice and joined the medical staff of Teche Regional Medical Center, said Butch Frazier, CEO, in a news release.

“We are pleased to welcome Dr. Jared Thurston to Morgan City and to St. Mary Parish as he begins the practice of ophthalmology through his new office, Thurston Ophthalmology,” Frazier said. “Dr. Thurston’s practice will fill a much needed area in the field of healthcare, helping fulfill our ongoing commitment of bringing necessary and accessible health care services right here close to home,” he adds.

Thurston received his bachelor of science degree in biology from California State University where he graduated magna cum laude. He received his medical degree from West Virginia University, School of Medicine in Morgantown, W.V. In addition, he completed his internship in internal medicine at Ochsner Medical Center, and his ophthalmology residency training program at LSU-Ochsner in New Orleans.

As an ophthalmologist, Thurston monitors and treats medical eye conditions including cataracts, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, foreign body removal and evaluation of work-related and other injuries. He can provide a variety of treatment options, including medical management of eye diseases and performing eye surgery for both minor and complex eye disorders, including plastic surgery of the eye. Eye health services such as annual dilated eye exams and prescriptions for eyeglasses and contacts will also be provided. Additional services will become available as his practice continues to grow.

“I wanted to become an ophthalmologist because improving someone’s eyesight greatly impacts a person’s life for the better. I enjoy working in clinic where most of my work is diagnostic, but I also enjoy the operating room ‘where I use my hands to perform procedures that are vision changing. Finally, I find it fascinating that as I look into the eye, it can become a window to the entire body to help diagnose a systemic disease,” Thurston said.

Thurston is looking forward to working with Teche Regional Medical Center’s medical staff to provide ophthalmology care to St. Mary Parish. He is now accepting new patients in his clinic, Thurston Ophthalmology. His clinic is located at 1120 Eighth St., Suite B in Morgan City and appointments can be made by calling 985-380-5688.
