Morgan City Lady Tigers win district contest
MORGAN CITY — The Morgan City Lady Tigers snapped a four-game losing streak Tuesday with a 50-43 victory against South Terrebonne in District 8-4A action.
The win was the first for the Lady Tigers since a Dec. 18 victory against Patterson on the road and their first win at home since Dec. 17 against St. Martinville.
No individual statistics were available from the contest.
With the win, Morgan City improves to 7-13 on the season and 1-1 in district play.
Morgan City will continue district play Friday on the road in Houma at Vandebilt Catholic, Class 4A’s third-ranked squad in the latest Louisiana Sports Writers Association poll.
Patterson wins at home
The Patterson Lumberjills picked up their second district victory of the season with a 56-34 win against Franklin High at home Tuesday.
While the ‘Jills were outscored 12-9 in the first quarter and trailed 22-21 at the half, Patterson outscored Franklin 18-5 in the third quarter to take control of the contest.
In the fourth, the Lumberjills added a 17-7 scoring advantage for the win.
Alex Benjamin was one of three ‘Jills in double figures with 18 points. She added six rebounds, three steals and a block.
Other Lumberjills’ in double figures included Nakia Brooks with 13 points as well as five rebounds; and Tiera Butler added 10 points in addition to three rebounds and a steal.
Other top Patterson contributors included Jazmin Evans, six points, two rebounds and four steals; Gaylen Grogan, four points, two rebounds and one block; and Tala Johnson, three points and eight rebounds.
Patterson (3-11, 2-3 in district) will return to action Friday when it travels to Erath.
Central Catholic defeats Ascension Episcopal
Central Catholic overwhelmed Ascension Episcopal, 60-21, Tuesday in Youngsville.
Central Catholic, ranked third in the latest Louisiana Sports Writers Association’s Class 1A poll, outscored Ascension Episcopal in every quarter except the fourth when both teams put up eight points.
After taking a 21-5 lead after a quarter, Central Catholic extended its lead to 37-11 at the half.
In the third, the squad outscored Ascension Episcopal 15-2.
The Lady Eagles knocked down 10 three pointers in the contest and 47.6 percent of their attempts from behind the arc.
Randi Brown and Meo Knight each recorded double-doubles in the victory. Brown had 23 points and 13 rebounds as well as eight steals and five assists, while Knight had 14 points, 11 rebounds, five steals, three assists and two blocks.
Other top Central Catholic contributors included Abbie Bergeron, seven points, two assists and one steal; Makayla McDaniel, six points, three rebounds, two assists and a steal; and Hallie Autin, six points, one steal and two rebounds.
Central Catholic (13-6, 1-0 in District 8-1A) will return to action Friday when it hosts Gueydan, who was receiving votes in the latest Louisiana Sports Writers Association Class 1A poll.
Berwick falls to Abbeville
The Berwick Lady Panthers fell at home to Abbeville, 54-26, in District 9-3A action Tuesday.
Abbeville took a 13-6 lead after a quarter and extended its advantage to 25-13 at the half.
In the third quarter, Abbeville and Berwick both had their largest scoring output of the night as Abbeville put up 19 points to Berwick’s eight.
Abigail Ohlin led Berwick with nine points, while Khadijah Johnson added seven and Ajia Robinson, six.
Berwick will return to action Friday when it hosts Franklin in a 6 p.m. varsity contest.
