Mistakes hurt Panthers in season-opening loss to Delcambre

BERWICK — After a close first half, Delcambre pulled away from Berwick in the second half to win 34-12 in the season opener Friday at Geisler Stadium.
Berwick scored first in the ballgame, taking advantage of a Delcambre fumble on Delcambre’s first offensive play of the game. Berwick drove down the field 38 yards and scored on a 5-yard run by quarterback Bobby Boudreaux. Berwick failed on the two-point conversation.
Delcambre responded with a 55-yard scoring drive, capped by a 25-yard touchdown run by Chevaun Walters. Delcambre missed the extra point to bring the score to 6-6 with 29 seconds remaining in the first quarter.
In the second quarter, Berwick came right back, scoring on a 25-yard pass from Boudreaux to Brooks Richard. However, Berwick failed on the two-point conversion after faking a kick but still led 12-6.
Berwick stopped Delcambre on its next possession but fumbled the punt return back to Delcambre at the Berwick 35.
On the drive, Bubba Latiolais scored on a 26-yard run, bringing the score to 13-12, Delcambre, at halftime.
In the third quarter, Berwick had no offensive possessions due to a Delcambre scoring drive that took 8:14 off the clock, and a fumble on the kick return.
“We just missed opportunities ... the second half we just never got the ball,” Berwick coach Craig Brodie said. “We ran no offensive plays in the third quarter.”
Berwick fumbled three times in the game, losing all three.
Delcambre scored two more touchdowns in the fourth quarter, one on an 8-yard pass from Brayton Trahan to Dustin Waguespack with 11:53 to go — capitalizing on a Berwick fumble — and another on a 4-yard run by Latiolais with 4:49 remaining.
Besides fumbles, Berwick also was plagued by penalties with nine for 71 yards.
“We’re very young, very inexperienced,” Brodie said. “It’s a process we’ve been going through for two years going on the third year, and now we’ve got to continue to build upon ... We’re still building our foundation … We’re not ready to put any bricks and walls up yet (on a foundation). We’re just not playing very well and just got to continue to work at it.”
Boudreaux was 3-for-10 passing for 63 yards with one touchdown and one interception. He also ran for 38 yards on 14 carries and a touchdown. Justin Morvant was Berwick’s leading rusher with 56 yards on seven carries.
Delcambre head coach Darcy Delcambre said the first half was back and forth, and both sides were having a lot of cramping.
Delcambre starting quarterback Zachary Trahan went down with an injury in the third quarter.
“Our second teamers, our reserves had to step up and take control,” Delcambre said. “Our quarterback goes down. Our second-string quarterback, Brayton Trahan, came in and (led) the offense just like it’s our first string.”
Delcambre amassed 271 yards of total offense in the game with 181 yards coming in the second half.
“Our defense probably played the best in the second half holding Berwick out of the end zone,” he said.
Berwick had 184 yards total offense in the game but just 32 yards in the second half.
Delcambre had trouble hanging onto the ball, fumbling nine times in the game but recovered all except one.
Delcambre said fumbles have “been haunting us for the last three or four years. We have a tendency once we get in the open to not take care of the football.”
Delcambre said his team has a tough schedule this season and will play Lake Arthur next week.
Berwick travels to play Highland Baptist in New Iberia Friday.
