Construction began last week at the site for the new Neighborhood Market Walmart located on La. 70 next to Sonic and is set to open at the beginning of 2015.
“The general contractor has boots on the ground right now,” Morgan City Planning and Zoning Director Anthony Governale said. The site prep work required for the project is extensive, he said. Journeyman Construction in Austin, Texas, is the contractor that will build the store.
The store is 41,000 square feet and will have a grocery including a pharmacy with a drive thru. However, the store will not have many dry goods, he said.
“It’s mainly just a scaled down Walmart,” Governale said. “The ones that I’ve seen have the painted or the stained concrete floors. It looks almost like a warehouse.”
Work began several weeks ago at the site on the storm water plan in order to comply with Environmental Protection Agency regulations, Governale said. “It’s required for jobs of a certain size or an acreage, which they are,” Governale said. The fence around the construction site is a silt fence to ensure no material runs off from the job site into the streets or storm drains, he said.
The grand opening for the store is scheduled for Jan. 1, 2015, Journeyman Construction On-Site Superintendent Leroy Thompson said.
According to Walmart’s website, the first Neighborhood Market opened in 1998, and the stores offer shopping for groceries, pharmacy items and general merchandise. Baton Rouge, Covington, Harvey, Kenner and Mandeville are other in-state communities that have Neighborhood Market Walmart stores.
The Wal-Mart corporate office did not reply to requests for information about the Morgan City store.
