Hanson Memorial Lady Tigers slip by Morgan City Lady Tigers
MORGAN CITY — Emily Champagne notched the mound victory, leading the Hanson Lady Tigers to a 9-8 win over the Morgan City Lady Tigers here Thursday at the MCHS Softball Complex in the season opener.
Hanson (1-0) manufactured one run in the top half of the seventh inning to break an 8-8 tie for the win.
Champagne earned the win in relief of Hanson starter Evelyn Pontiff, who worked three innings, allowing five earned runs on six hits with two strikeouts. Champagne (1-0) collected the win after hurling four complete frames, surrendering two earned runs on four hits with four strikeouts and two walks.
Tyler Hebert suffered the mound loss for the Lady Tigers, pitching seven complete innings, allowing nine runs on seven hits with three strikeouts and two walks.
The Hanson Lady Tigers scored five runs in the top half of the third frame for a 5-1 lead.
In the bottom half of the third, Morgan City rallied for four runs, knotting the game at 5-5.
Hanson retaliated with three runs in the fifth only to allow Morgan City to answer in the bottom half of the fifth to tie the game at 8-8.
Hanson’s Lady Tigers earned the 9-8 season openeing victory with one run in the top half of the seventh to move to 1-0 on the season.
Hanson’s Kim Sonnier and Paige Diamond led the Lady Tigers at the plate. Sonnier went 2 for 3 with two runs and two RBI while Diamond turned in a 2 for 4 effort with a pair of RBI.
Other top hitters for the Lady Tigers were: Mallory Chaisson, 1 for 3, 2 runs; Macy Simoneaux, 1 for 3, 2 runs, RBI and Caroline Soulis, 1 for 1.
Hanson (1-0) will play host to the Patterson Lady Jills on Tuesday at 4 p.m. in their next outing.
