Morgan City High School’s Ke’Aira Turner will participate in the 15th Annual Down Under Track and Field Meet in Australia in July. Turner said she was selected to represent Louisiana in the 200-meter dash at the event, which will be held in Brisbane, Australia. Her trip will be July 5-13.

Memorial Day Weekend in Morgan City had a different atmosphere this year as the inaugural Freedom Fest was held at Lake End Parkway in Morgan City. The event, put on by the American Legion Riders Post 96 in Morgan City, featured a car show, bike show, live music, food and guest speakers, among other things.

Historic hotel burns, 17 lose their homes

The former Peck’s Hotel at 905 Main St. was fully involved when the photo above was captured at 6:30 p.m., Monday. Below, Assistant Franklin Fire Chief Jeff Hildreth, left, is on scene to inspect the damages. Donations of clothing and household goods for the 17 people left homeless can be dropped off at the fire station on First Street, the Emergency Aid Center on Commercial Street or in collection boxes located at Capital One Bank on Northwest Boulevard.

Seventeen people are homeless this morning after a fire destroyed the historic Peck’s Hotel on Main Street in Franklin Monday night.

Day of Prayer

National Day of Prayer commemoration was held Thursday at Franklin City Hall. The event was created in 1952 by a joint resolution of the United States Congress, and signed into law by President Harry S. Truman. According to the National Day of Prayer Task Force, “It exists to communicate with every individual the need for personal repentance and prayer, to create appropriate materials, and to mobilize the Christian community to intercede for America’s leaders and its families.”

Sheriff: No bomb found at Amelia Belle after report of possible threat

Amelia Belle Casino was evacuated for15 minutes Friday afternoon while St. Mary Parish Sheriff's Office deputies searched the casino after a possible bomb threat was reported. Bayou Vista Garden Club installed officers for 2015-17 during its May meeting.
