Representatives of local governments got no good news on sales taxes Monday at the St. Mary Parish Council of Governments quarterly meeting in Franklin.

The former Morgan City Housing Authority director and two other former employees were sentenced Monday to jail time for a conspiracy related to theft of over $500,000. A fourth former employee received five years of probation, U.S. Attorney Stephanie Finley said in a news release.

Sugarcane Field Day

Participants in the 2016 St. Mary, Iberia and Vermilion Sugarcane Field Day traveled Friday to one of the prepared stops at the Iberia Research Station in Jeanerette. Presenters gave speeches about sugarcane seed strains. The event also featured information on new technology and science behind the ever-changing sugarcane industry. LSU AgCenter scientists at the Iberia Research Station also conducts research on cattle and row crops. Scientists also study energy cane, a variety of sugarcane developed to produce biomass that can be turned into fuel for the emerging biofuel market. The 1,137-acre station in Iberia Parish has 900 acres of summer perennial pasture and hay meadows, a 200-head feedlot, and 150 acres devoted to research with agronomic crops. The cattle research includes studies of crossbreeding cattle to evaluate the suitability of tropically adapted breeds to Louisiana, resistance to internal parasites and efficient use of nutrients.
