Rain early on Saturday didn’t dampen the turnout or the cooks’ spirits during the Fifth Annual Bayou BBQ Bash held under the U.S. 90 bridge in Morgan City. More than 50 barbecue enthusiasts participated in St. Mary Chamber of Commerce-sponsored cook-off that featured competitive cooking teams, corporate teams and St.
The bats were busy at Alexandria on Saturday, and when the dust cleared Franklin All Stars 10U had a 12-10 win over West Carroll in six innings. The teams combined for 26 hits, including nine extra base hits. The game was back-and-forth heading into the sixth, with eight lead changes.

Sugarcane Field Day

Participants in the 2016 St. Mary, Iberia and Vermilion Sugarcane Field Day traveled Friday to one of the prepared stops at the Iberia Research Station in Jeanerette. Presenters gave speeches about sugarcane seed strains. The event also featured information on new technology and science behind the ever-changing sugarcane industry. LSU AgCenter scientists at the Iberia Research Station also conducts research on cattle and row crops. Scientists also study energy cane, a variety of sugarcane developed to produce biomass that can be turned into fuel for the emerging biofuel market. The 1,137-acre station in Iberia Parish has 900 acres of summer perennial pasture and hay meadows, a 200-head feedlot, and 150 acres devoted to research with agronomic crops. The cattle research includes studies of crossbreeding cattle to evaluate the suitability of tropically adapted breeds to Louisiana, resistance to internal parasites and efficient use of nutrients. Scientists conduct studies on forage-fed beef, which is becoming more popular. (Photos by Colin Murphey)
