The local emergency room has seen what doctors describe as an “alarming increase” in patients using synthetic marijuana, and police say that while it’s been in the area for a number of years, its use is on the rise in the Tri-City area.

While it’s still early in the season, 16 cases of the flu were reported by Teche Regional Medical Center’s emergency room between Sept. 1 and Tuesday. Sabrina Roy, hospital spokeswoman, said the 11 cases in September and five in October are not indicative of a spike in disease.

The Marine Corps League, St. Mary Detachment held its 14th annual poker run Saturday. The event also served as the organization’s kickoff for its annual Toys for Tots drive. Riders who participated in the poker run could either donate their entry fee to be used for the Toys for Tots drive or the area detachment of the Marine Corps League, which will help with operational expenses, according to David Martin, commandant for the area Marine Corps’ detachment. As part of their entry fee, riders were required to bring an unwrapped toy for the Toys for Tots drive. Also, plate lunches were sold later in the day, which benefitted the Marine Corps League’s yearly operational expenses, Martin said. The Toys for Tots drive will continue until Christmas Day. Bins will be located at various businesses throughout the area including most banks and dollar stores. All toys collected will stay in St. Mary Parish and will be distributed to youngsters, Martin said.
