Local people who recently opened new businesses in Morgan City are hopeful and counting on the region's economy to improve in 2017. The St. Mary Chamber of Commerce held ribbon cuttings for two Morgan City businesses last week, Labco Batteries and Kimbla's Cakes.

Baldwin and Franklin both held Martin Luther King Jr. Day events Monday in honor of the slain civil rights leader. In Franklin, the event was a motorcade which began on Wall Street and proceeded up the boulevard named in honor of Dr. King, then to St. Joseph's Baptist Church. More than 60 vehicles participated in the motorcade.

Tri-City area residents, young and old, were challenged Monday to have a cause in life that requires them to overcome giant obstacles during the St. Mary NAACP’s Martin Luther King Jr. program at Mt. Pilgrim Baptist Church in Morgan City.

(Updated) 2017 Cypress Sawmill Festival canceled

The festival committee announced Wednesday that they have canceled the 2017 festival due to declining revenues and uncooperative weather the past few years. Organizers of the Cypress Sawmill Festival near Patterson have made the decision to not hold the festival, normally held in April, in 2017.
