Long after the last taillight from a visitor’s car that attended the 10th Annual Eagle Expo last weekend faded down the highway, it occurred to me we’ll still be here. By that, I mean every one of us has a responsibility to take care of the little piece of eagle heaven that surrounds Berwick Bay.

The Marine Corps League, St. Mary Detachment held its 14th annual poker run Saturday. The event also served as the organization’s kickoff for its annual Toys for Tots drive. Riders who participated in the poker run could either donate their entry fee to be used for the Toys for Tots drive or the area detachment of the Marine Corps League, which will help with operational expenses, according to David Martin, commandant for the area Marine Corps’ detachment. As part of their entry fee, riders were required to bring an unwrapped toy for the Toys for Tots drive. Also, plate lunches were sold later in the day, which benefitted the Marine Corps League’s yearly operational expenses, Martin said. The Toys for Tots drive will continue until Christmas Day. Bins will be located at various businesses throughout the area including most banks and dollar stores. All toys collected will stay in St. Mary Parish and will be distributed to youngsters, Martin said.
