The third annual Bayou BBQ Bash survived the threat of bad weather and ended up being as much of a success as organizers could hope for under the circumstances. Rain threatened to cause a lower turnout this year than last year, Don Tellman, one of the organizers, said.

St. Mary’s Pony 14-year-old All-Stars finished as runner-up at the Pony 14 & Under Super Region Tournament in Youngsville Sunday, falling to the tournament’s undefeated squad, Crowley, 10-0 in six innings. Despite the loss, St. Mary has qualified for the Pony South Zone Tournament in Burleson, Texas, which begins July 31. St. Mary Pony 14-year-old All-Stars bounced back from a tough loss to the Crowley Nationals with three consecutive wins before falling again to Crowley in the Super Region title game.

This year’s Franklin section of the race is Oct. 4

The City of Franklin will host its portion of Tour du Teche on Saturday, Oct. 4 along Bayou Teche. Franklin’s portion of Tour du Teche is called the “Sugar Race.” Paddlers will begin the Sugar Race in St. Martinville and continue their journey to Franklin; this part of Tour du Teche is 59 miles.

Scholarship at Morgan City High

Kaitlyn Verret, a 2014 Morgan City High School graduate was presented the H&B Young Foundation Scholarship during the Morgan City High School graduation ceremony. The scholarship is valued at $8,000 over a four-year period. She is the daughter of Terrie and Albert Verret. Presenting the scholarship to Verret was Mickey Fabre III, principal.

Competitors showcase BBQ at ‘Meet the Cooks’

The St. Mary Parish Chamber of Commerce hosted its Business After Hours “Meet the Cooks” Thursday at the Hampton Inn & Suites in Morgan City ahead of this weekend’s Bayou BBQ Bash.
