School leaders said today that St. Mary Parish school system policy affords students the opportunity to pray.

Patterson High School knocked off Abbeville High School 62-55 in overtime in both team’s season opener Thursday in Patterson. Patterson and Abbeville combined for 90 free throw attempts in the contest as Patterson was 26 of 56 from the line and Abbeville was 19 of 34 from the free throw stripe. The Patterson Lumberjills used a big fourth quarter to force overtime against Abbeville before knocking them off in the extra period for a 62-55 win in both team’s season opener Thursday. Trailing 37-22 entering the fourth quarter, Patterson outscored Abbeville 23-8 in the frame to knot the score at 45 at the end of regulation.

Muscular Dystrophy Association fundraiser

The Muscular Dystrophy Association raised funds Thursday by having several area residents agree to be picked up by a police officer and brought to the Hampton Inn in Morgan City where they made phone calls to raise money for children and adults with the disease. Among those participating were Courtney Arabie, Joann Blanchard, Terry Holcombe and Danielle Ballance. Geoff Stoute, Daily Review sports editor, was among those raising bail money.
